In this series of lessons we’ll learn how to use the locator
and wake features of Maya Oceans to make objects float on the
surface, and create ripples in our ocean. Using advanced
dynamic and boat locators we can define many attributes of
our floating object to create realistic motion.
We’ll begin this project by learning about the most basic
locator, the Ocean Surface locator. We’ll then branch into
the more complicated locators that allow us to have dynamic
motion including buoyancy, damping and gravity. We’ll finish
the locator section with a lesson on the fun feature of
Motorboats, which let us have a throttle and rudder on an
object and make a realistic boat animation complete with
pitching and rolling. We’ll then learn the basics of using
wakes to deform our surface as if something has just dropped
into the water. We’ll learn a few advanced techniques such
as, connecting a foam generator to our ocean as well as
advanced color bleeding and foamy waves.

of modeling tools and techniques to create damage effects
using a building.

Damaging 3d models presents some interesting challenges and
creates new issues from a modeling point of view. Perhaps
you now need to build an engine because a shot calls for the
hood of your CG car to be damaged. Or the walls of your set
have been damaged, displaying their inner structure. We’ll
cover some basic techniques for adding the needed resolution
to the models. We’ll talk about how different types of materials
react to damage – wood vs. metal or concrete. We’ll cover
methods for breaking apart pieces of geometry as well as
dressing the set and using dynamics to add rubble very
quickly. Once done, you’ll be able to apply what you’ve
learned and start destroying your own 3d models.

Jeff Okun has contributed visual effects and 2nd unit

Sea, The Last Starfighter, Lolita, Cutthroat Island, Sphere
and Wes Craven’s Shocker.

His credits also include ground breaking music videos from
such varied artists as Sting, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Janet
Jackson, Wayne Newton, Bryan Adams, Amy Grant, Dolly
Parton, Prince, Michael Jackson, the Neville Brothers
and Rod Stewart.

Jeff has also created visual effects tracking and bidding
software that is in wide use within the industry. He is

technique dubbed the “PeriWinkle Effect” and the “Pencil Effect”, which
has been used in many projects to help achieve a more realistic
sense of danger and more accurate budgets.

Jeff began his career in the 1970’s as a photographer chronicling
the rock music scene, first shooting Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, then
moving on to Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Albert King, the Kinks, Johnny
Winter, Spirit, Captain Beefheart, Mountain, Arlo Gutherie, Buddy
Miles Express and many more.

تنها چیزی که ترسناک تر از یک سوسک دانشمند دیوانه ، یک زن کاملا ً بلوند 11و49 سانتی ، یک توده ژلاتینی پایدار ، یک میمون ماهی شکل از خود راضی و یک هیولای غیر قابل کنترل را می تواند نشان دهد ؛ دورنمایی از خلق هزاران افکت تصویری برای چنین گلچینی از ناهنجاری های ژنتیکی است. Chyuan Huang انیماتور شرکت DreamWork به جهت انواع افکت های مختلف در فیلم Monsters Vs Aliens ، نظیر میدان نبرد، تغییر شکل و شکستن بینی ، تخلیه انرژی ، طوفان کولاک ، ابر، شهاب های دنباله دار ، زباله های زمین ، انفجار هاورکرافت و ردپا از نرم افزار  Houdini استفاده کرد.

به گفته Huang ، “افکت های اصلی در  Houdini ، یک صفحه رقص و افکت انتقال انرژی است. صحنه رقص ( Dance Pad) ، ماشینی است با دکمه های نوری که به قدمهای کاراکتر و موسیقی واکنش نشان می دهد ؛ و افکت انتقال انرژی نیز زمانی رخ می دهد که انرژی نورانی از یک طریق مجموعه لوله های درون یک مجسمه غول پیکر انتقال می یابد”.

Houdini  برای دیگر افکت های کلیدی نظیر عرق کردن، اشک ریختن قهرمان فیلم ، قطرات آبی که از کاراکتر یا فنجان می ریزد ، تراوش آب اطراف کاراکتر عظیم جثه ای که از آب عبور می کند ؛ نیز بکار رفته است. همچنین افکت جالبی وجود دارد که در آن BOB ، حباب ژلاتینی نیمه شفاف با یک لیس غلیظ و مرطوب ، غذا را درون خود حل می کند.

 


رقص شبانه دور از خانه

Huang می گوید : “شاخصه اصلی که  برای افکت صحنه رقص در نظر گرفتیم عبارت بودند از اپراتورهای کانالی ( Channel Operators) یا CHOP و اپراتورهای سطحی( Surface Operators) یا SOP . صفحه رقص متشکل از 9 دکمه بود که می توانستند از یک صفحه خاص رنگی ، رنگ بگیرند. این دکمه ها در حالت غیر فعال ، در وضعیت Screern server قرار می گیرند که در آن ، تغییر آهسته شدت در سطوح پیرامونی ملموس است. پس از فعال شدن کامل ، دکمه ها تغییر رنگ می دهند تا با ضربه های موسیقی تناسب یابند. زمانیکه کاراکتر روی یک دکمه گام برداشته یا برقصد؛ آن صفحه پررنگ تر می شود.”

CHOP در نرم افزارHoudini برای پردازش فایلهای صوتی موسیقی رقص بکار می رفتند که بوسیله ادیتوریال( editorial) تهیه می شدند تا برای ضربه های اصلی موسیقی در زمان مناسب ، تلنگری ایجاد کنند. این تلنگر ها منجر به تغییراتی در رنگ دکمه و یک سری تغییرات رنگی به حالت تصادفی ( random) ، مارپیچی(spiral) یا گستره ( sweep)  می شدند.این تغییرات به جهت متناسب سازی حرکات کاراکتر در صحنه مربوطه طراحی شده بودند؛ مانند زمانی که کاراکتر با یک Foot Sweep می رقصید ؛ الگوی ریگ به حالت گسترده (sweep) تغییر می یافت.

دکمه ها با سنسورهایی تنظیم شده بودند که به هنگام حضور کفشهای کاراکتر یا دیگر اعضای بدن آن بر رویشان واکنش نشان می دادند. برای انجام این کار از  Houdini Scatter SOP استفاده شد تا نقاط حسگر بر روی هر دکمه ایجاد گردد. سپس Attribute Transfer SOP بعنوان عامل شناسایی شئ مجاور بکار گرفته شد تا هر زمان تعداد مشخصی از نقاط ، شئ نزدیک به آن را کشف کنند ؛ دکمه بصورت فعال تلقی شود.یک شبکه اپراتور کانالی دیگر نیز برای دریافت این سیگنال حسگر کاشف در کل چارچوب بکار رفت و تغییرات رنگی پیرامونی را برای دکمه های فعال نشده اضافه می کرد. یک Lag CHOP نیز تغییرات ملایم رنگی  از وضعیت روشن به تاریک را بررسی می نمود.

به گفته Huang ” در بخشی از داستان ، نزدیک به 20 شات وجود داشت که در آن صفحه رقص باید در حالت تعامل  با یک کاراکتر قرار می داشت. Houdini به من کمک کرد تا سیستمی را ایجاد کنم که در آن بتوان موسیقی و انیمیشن کاراکتر را وارد نموده و تغییرات شدت نور و رنگ را طبق روش های مربوطه بوجود آورد . “

زمانیکه صفحه رقص برای اولین شات تنظیم  می شد، به یک Houdini Digital Asset نیز جهت استفاده در شاتهای دیگر بدل می گشت. تولیدات انیمیشن شرکت DreamWork از ، دوربین و ادیتوریالی استفاده می کنند که به کاراکتر انیمیشنی سیالیت بخشیده و به کمک نرم افزار Houdini ، ارتقاء این تغییرات به مجموعه صفحه رقص را ساده تر نمایند. کنترل های سطح بالا باعث ایجاد یک واسط مطلوب برای یک کاربر گردیده و به نتیجه بخشی هر شات می افزاید. همچنین Houdini  توانست به نحوی کنترل های جدید را در هر زمان اضافه کند که به هنگام ارتقای کل مجموعه ، کنترل های جدید بطور اتوماتیک در هر شات قابل اجرا باشد.

هر نمونه از مجموعه دیجیتال را می توان با مجموعه های منحصر به فرد سطوح بالا سازگارسازی نمود و حتی اگر اجزای زیربنایی یک مجموعه تغییر یابد ؛ تغییرات در هر شات باقی می مانند.از سوی دیگر اگر تغییرات برای یک شات لازم بودند ؛ Houdini از چنان انعطافی برخوردار بود که حتی بر مجموعه دیجیتال نمونه سازی شده در محل لازم نیز تسلط می یافت.

Huang می گوید : ” ماهیت رویه ای ( Procedural nature) سیستم و  بکارگیری مجموعه های دیجیتال توانست یک مسیر انعطاف پذیری را خلق کند که براحتی تغییرات عملکرد صفحه رقص در آسمان را نیز مهار می کرد. مجموعه های به روز رسانی شده را می توان به سرعت تغییر داد و می توان بدون هیچ نگرانی نسبت به لجستیک ویرایش های زیاد در چندین شات  مختلف ؛ تصمیماتی خلاقانه را اتخاذ نمود.”

تبدیل ذرات به انرژی

برای افکت استخراج انرژی ( Energy extraction) که بوسیله Koen Vroeijenstijn خلق شد ؛ اپراتورهای داینامیک  Houdini  مورد استفاده قرار گرفت. Koen ، با یک شبیه سازی سیال آغاز نمود و سپس ذرات را از طریق شبیه سازی تغییر داد تا افکت انرژی در حال برون ریزی از یک کاراکتر را ایجاد کند. سپس ، او منحنی های دنباله ای ( Trail curves) را بوجود آورد که با لایه های متعدد ذرات ترکیب شده بودند تا به میدان انرژی رندر شده ، یک نمای اتری ببخشند. نرم افزار Houdini، راه حل موفقیت آمیزی را ارائه کرد ؛ زیرا زمان بسیار کمتر از آنچه که پیش بینی شده بود؛ صرف نمود.

از رویکرد بصری ، شاتهای انتقال انرژی ، همان دنباله افکت استخراج بودند که مشتمل بر جریان های ذرات شناور در درون لوله ها می شدند. با استفاده از حرکات ساده ذرات که با مدلسازی رویه ای ذرات آرایش یافته ، تیم توانست ذرات بزرگ افکت استخراج را مجدداً بکار گیرد. همین تفکیک شبکه های Houdini کمک نمود تا نمای افکت پایانی که در آن ، انرژی در یک کره جمع می شد؛ یکپارچه گردد.

افکت انتقال انرژی  نیز همانند یک Houdini Digital Asset ایجاد شد. طبق این فناوری ، مدیریت تمامی شاتها بطور همزمان با جریان های مختلف ذرات شناور به سادگی میسر شد.

افزار کاربردی CG

طبق گفته Huang، علاوه بر ایجاد افکت های بصری با نرم افزار  Houdini، از این نرم افزار برای تغییر نتایج شبیه سازی هایی که با ابزار دیگر خلق شده بودند ، استفاده شد.

در یک دو شات که ماهیت بخش اعظمی از آب را در بر داشت ؛ شبیه سازی اولیه با استفاده از ابزار داخلی تحقق یافت و سپس به نقشه های مقدار جابجایی آب بدل شد تا مورد استفاده pipeline قرار گیرد. پس از چندین بار تکرار شبیه سازی اب ، بازرسان حرکت کلی سطح آب را تأیید کردند و سپس تیم توانست رسیدگی قسمت هایی  نظیر تلاطم آب را تحت اختیار قرار دهد. به جای شبیه سازی مجدد آب که علاوه بر ایجاد تغییرات ناخواسته ، کار وقت گیری نیز بشمار می آمد ؛ Huang تصمیم گرفت از نرم افزار Houdini بعنوان فرایند بعدی جهت اصلاح مستقیم پیامدها استفاده کند.

Huang، تصاویر نقشه جابجایی آب را برای این نرم افزار می خواند و آنها را به هندسه سطح آب مبدل می کرد. سپس او ضمن بکارگیری کاراکترهای انیمیشنی بعنوان یک مرجع ، از اپراتورهای مغناطیسی استفاده کرد تا زمان بندی پویانمایی سطح آب را تغییر دهد. در خاتمه، او این هندسه را مجدداً به همان نقشه های جابجایی تبدیل نمود که می توانستند با نقشه های اصلی ادغام شده و افکت رندر شده نهایی را حاصل نمایند.

محیط کاربردی یکپارچه Houdini به هنرمندان خلق جلوه های ویژه اجازه می دهد تا با هندسه ، تصاویر ، منحنی های انیمشنی و داینامیک های یکپارچه کار کنند و طیف خلق کامل موضوعات VFX در تولید قابل توجه نماید.

توانایی Houdini در بکارگیری جریان رویه ای انواع وظایف باعث شد که به ابزار بسیار ارزشمندی برای تیم جلوه های ویژه بدل شده و بر فیلم هیولاها در برابر بیگانگان _ Monsters Vs Aliens – اجراء گردد. هنرمندان این نرم افزار توانستند به سرعت افکت های شبیه سازی شده را با مجموعه های مختلف تطبیق داده و به تیم کمک کنند تا بتواند به ویرایش تعیین شده دست یابد. در پایان ،  Houdini  کمک کرد که اجرای جلوه های ویژه با ترس کمتری همراه باشند ؛ گو اینکه هیولاهای خوبی را ظاهر می کردند.

Jeff is a self-taught freelance digital artist and has
been freelancing for the past six years. In that time
he has worked on many projects, a lot of which have been
mechanical illustrations for companies like Johnson
Controls, Trane, Carrier, and Honeywell. More recently
he has spent some time teaching on-site mental ray
classes, which he enjoys as it has allowed him to travel
around the country and meet a lot of really great people
